Our Story, About Ohm Recording Studio in Dallas, TX
Back in the day… Born and raised in Brooklyn NYC, I’ve been a musician since the age of 13. I initially started out as a hip hop DJ believe it or not, and I’ve been in lots of bands, played lots of shows in iconic venues such as CBGB’s in NYC, The Offramp in Seattle and The Troubadour in L.A. My first introduction to recording was on a Tascam 4 Track cassette recorder with a Shure SM57 mic. At that time, I was just figuring out how the recording process worked. I wrote songs and made demo’s and shared them with band members so we could work on those ideas at rehearsal.
Learning the Hard Way, Disaster Recording Session Still a newbie to recording, a friend of mine asked me to record some guitar parts for him and he rented out a "real" recording studio in Manhattan. I was super excited and nervous to have my first real recording studio experience. I had maybe 3 months of experience recording guitar at that point (1996) and it was a disaster. I remember the engineer telling me I couldn’t keep time and I was an amateur, and my tone sucked. Ugh, I was devastated but I wasn’t deterred from trying again. I became obsessed with the practice of recording, upgrading to eMagic Logic (this was before Apple owned Logic back in 1996) on a Gateway 2000 computer with the terrible stock sound card, 1/8th adapter, no mic-pre and my Shure SM57. I spent many hours honing my skill so that disaster recording session never happened again.
Amazing Opportunities I Never Dreamed of... From that point on, I started to become the friend who recorded their friends bands. I’ve had some great opportunities and experiences along the way from attending the TapeOp conference in 2003 as a staffed member of Avast Studios Seattle, to recording and mixing some hip hop tracks on Andy Wallaces SSL console (The one that was used on Nirvana’s Nevermind and The Notorious B.I.G’s Ready to Die records) in Manhattan.
Life Happens and You Find Your Path
In between then and now music started to take a back seat due to life happening, marriage, children, divorce, another marriage and more children and a career in digital marketing, but music was always a constant even if I wasn’t doing music 100% of the time.
11 years ago we moved from NYC to Dallas and I started focusing more on music since we had more space (an actual house) and had some more time since I was working 100% from home. This turned into a slow process of acquiring gear and instruments, but still no intentions of starting a studio. I recorded some solo projects at local studios, and didn’t have the best experiences there so I decided, lets build something out that I can record in which became an idea to offer the studio up to local Dallas musicians and beyond for in person and remote recording and mixing projects.
Then Came Ohm Recording Studio
I started Ohm Recording Studios out of my home in 2022 and it's already gone through a couple of phases over the last year. Specifically treating the room and making sure it is optimal for recording. I went with a mix of GIK acoustic panels, bass traps and clouds and some homemade wall panels, heavier solid doors and automatic door sills, and down the rabbit hole of mass loaded vinyl for my floor and ceiling. I purchased the Sonarworks Sound ID software and reference mic to tune my room as much as possible. I’m pretty happy with the result at this point and started recording my friend Eric Gamero’s second 5 song EP for his band Desert Youth. I’m super excited for this year with some more projects lined up. Reach out if you want to talk about your projects or music in general!
